"CHANCE OF A LIFETIME"

In 1999, the Spiders Basketball Club hosts its second annual "Chance of a Lifetime" basketball program in Trinidad and Tobago.

This year, our program is designed to help local student/athletes meet entry requirements for acquiring basketball scholarships at United States colleges and high schools. Our program also helps to place these athletes at suitable schools. Jump ball date is set for April 17, 1999.

With the exciting talent now on the islands, we propose to make this year's program bigger and better. Our program is scheduled to last 12 weeks during which time, our participating athletes will develop their basketball skills. Our athletes will also be required to achieve specified grades at school while they are on the program.

At the end of the program, United States high schools and colleges will have the opportunity to recruit our players. We will organise a major basketball exhibition game for all our players, at which United States coaches would be able to see our athletes play, and to speak to them, with a view to recruiting. Our exhibition game this year is scheduled for September 26, 1998.

LAST YEAR'S PROGRAM

In 1998 the "Chance of a lifetime" program was conducted for the first time in Trinidad and Tobago. The program achieved immediate success with scores of student/athletes participating from all over the island.

Our program also recieved good exposure in the local media, with Trinidad's three local television stations all covering the basketball exhibition game. Our program was also featured on the popular daytime Trinidad and Tobago television show "Community Dateline". In the local press, two full page feature articles were published by the Trinidad Express, the country's leading daily newspaper, and several other articles were carried in the other dailies.

SUPPORT STAFF

"Chance of a lifetime" has a cohesive, talented and dedicated group of individuals that work together as a team to produce the best in our athletes.

Our support team comprises Gary Pantin - director, Dhibron Murray, Hapta Murray - coach, Glen Patrick - assistant coach and Karen Lee - secretary. Together, we have more than fifty years of experience in basketball coaching and administration. Additional support for the program is being provided by a team of professionals and volunteers drawn from a cross-section of the local community.

TRAINING FACILITIES

Trinidad and Tobago comprises 1,980sq. ml., about one and a half times the size of the state of Rhode Island. The territory enjoys a tropical climate with a dry season from January to May and a wet season from June to December. This makes it easier for basketball to be played outside all year round.

Chance of a lifetime uses a fully equiped multi-purpose indoor gym to conduct training sessions, but athletes practice all year round at both indoor and outdoor facilities.
